Screen of death

when i took out my phone today, i realized that it wouldn't start, even after when i got home and plugged in the charger, the keys light up along with the screen, althought the screen is still dark when it lights up. it just won't start.

I've checked all settings I could find however, there is no sound. No ring tone at all. I cannot tell I am getting a call. When someone does call, the display shows the word "silence" on the lower right hand side of display.
