connection from wall to the unit

How should the color of the wires match from wall outlet wire to the units back. the unit is not working as one of the wire has melted off. 2 things I noticed. the melted wire is not fastened tight enough. #2 The wire color connection does not seem to be right. the black wall wire is hooked up with red unit wire and red wall wire is hooked to black unit wire. This is how it came with the house when I purchased this new home in 2006
