Product Problem: washer goes through the regular motions until it is ready to drain/spin and then it stops.

The washer goes through the regular motions until it is ready to drain/spin and then it stops.
I propped a screw driver into the slot where the plunger would go and the screwdriver pushes against something & the machine works fine. But if I close the lid without the screwdriver in place, the plunger does not start the machine. A diagram would be very helpful if available. Thanks in advance.
