purchased New, without instructions... not sure how the dirty water is picked up out of carpet

0 this unit has a bladder inside the holding tank, when filled with hot water it rises to the top. As you use the clean water, the machine will suck the dirty water and it will full (under) the bladder. It displaces itself. Just dump out dirty water and fill bladder with clean water and you are set to go...hope this is of help. JD
