Broan 1051-J Compactor. When Ram goes all the way ...

Broan 1051-J Compactor. When Ram goes all the way to the bottom it won't com back up. Loud scretching noises. If I turn it off and turn it back on it will come back up. Any ideas of what the problem could be?
