I purchased a new coffee maker. After following the instructions for 1 cup, I can't get it to brew. Steam emanates from the carafe, but no coffee drips down. What have I failed to do correctly? The filter is in place. I turned the knob for brew. I am puzzled by a round plastic piece with a handle on it. Is it essential and where is it supposed to fit?
