I tried using the automatic cooking function on my retro( 1978?) Custom delux Frigidaire and now I cannot get it to switch back to manual or work at all. How can I reset this? The stop knob says push for Manual but that is not working.

Without knowing the specific model on your Frigidaire Custom Deluxe oven I would perform a master reset on your appliance, which can be done by flipping the household circuit breaker off for roughly about ten minutes.
