Cleaning under the inside drain guard...

We rinse most of the food off our dishes before placement in the unit, and still find there is a disgusting growth under the drain guard after about 1-2 months of daily use. How do we prevent this from happening? How do we get the guard completely removed for cleaning out the gunk?
