How do I know if my dishwasher is installed correc...

How do I know if my dishwasher is installed correctly? I just purchased my home and the dishwasher has obviously been used, but despite water getting to the machine, nothing seems to be happening. According to the technician who came under my home warranty the issue is a plumbing problem.
