There is no tension on the oven knob. We took off...

There is no tension on the oven knob. We took off outside knob and can push silver housing unit back and forth, won't turn seems like the spring broke? Is this possible? Can anyone tell us how to take off front of oven to look at problem or can the lid of stove be removed? Thanks, Colleen
