i have a 1979 General Electric Side by Side TFG 20...

i have a 1979 General Electric Side by Side TFG 20JAWW and I'm trying to understand the function of the ratcheted knob on the timer. The fridge has given wonderful service but now the freezer keeps icing up every 2-3 days.
