the light keeps flashing and when you turn the dial nothing happens

I had this problem as well. The reason is that the small circuit board of the dial is getting loose and turns with the dial on the other side of the dial. Once the dial is set to a speed other than 0 the machine's safety mode will prevent it from starting.
Solution: open up the top (4 screws behind the silver band, you have to cut through the band to access the screws). Press with a screwdriver or similar against the little circuit board towards the dial, so that the little metal thingy on the board is pressed into the dial socket. Make sure the circuit board is standing upright in a 90° angle to the floor. And fixed.
Glue back the metal band or replace it with something else.
