Hamilton Beach Meal Maker Express grill. Fat gets ...

Hamilton Beach Meal Maker Express grill. Fat gets inside the body of the grill, ie inside the shell that is screwed on, below the removable plates and below the elements. Fat will leak out if the grill is set on end. I worry re: possibility of fire. Can I unscrew shell to clean interior?
