Need manual to determine the function of the control knob. There are no markings on it.

0 The knob I referred to earlier is by the compressor and seems to regulate the internal temperature of the freezer, but it has no numbers and only turns one direction. Is this what I need to turn to get the freezer colder inside? The freezer had been working fine until a day or two ago when foods started defrosting. The power light was on but the compressor was not running. I have no manual for this freezer, but it is probably a 2006 model.
