Does the refrigerator automatically come on itself...

Does the refrigerator automatically come on itself to cool things in the fridge or do you have to keep setting the thermostat all the time for it to come on. I didn't receive an owners manual for the refrigerator. Is there one that I could down load on-line about my fridge it's a 4.6 model in white
