Won't cool. Repairman replaced thermostat and stil...

Won't cool. Repairman replaced thermostat and still not working. Makes sound like it is working but not cooling. Repairman said it needed to be replaced. We paid $1200 for it in 2005. What do you think? I don't want to spend that much $!
