Hi How do we turn the hob burners off on our Range...

Hi How do we turn the hob burners off on our Rangemaster 60 gas cooker? Which way do you turn them? In the manual it says do not operate between max and off positions. But when we tried turning it anticlockwise past 'low' it wouldn't move. Please help.
