I have an older version of the Leisure rangemaster...

I have an older version of the Leisure rangemaster 110 - it has four indivisudal solid round electric hobs for pans. The top left hop has a central bit in the middle which moves up and down. What is this for?

0 The above mentioned manual is for a gas range not the electric one! It doesn't answer the question.
