Dishes are getting clean, but the knob that turns ...

Dishes are getting clean, but the knob that turns it on is VERY hard to turn. If I pull the knob out slightly, it will turn somewhat easier, but have concerns about the timer then. Are these two problems related? How to correct? Dishwasher is 8 yrs. old, would I be better to replace?
