I purchased a whirlpool dishwasher from Sears and ...

I purchased a whirlpool dishwasher from Sears and it came with a plastic clip on the inside of the door to lock it shut. How does it work? I can spring it shut and open the door, but how does it work in operation. Is this clip to be removed, and if os, how? The machine is ready to use except for this plastic latching device. CAn you help me?
