I believe I have finally figured out why my ice maker breaks every few months. A repair man has replaced the motor assembly twice already, and my Whirlpool fridge is only 3 years old. Tip: Remove the door to the ice tray so you can see the dispenser arms. If you open the freezer door and you see the arms in another position (ice maker is cycling) IMMEDIATELY close the freezer door and let the cycle finish. I believe if you leave the freezer door open too long, the ice re-freezes to the tray and the shaft breaks when it tries to eject the ice.
