II Making coffee
Note: Your coffeemaker is equipped with a reusable,
gold tone filter, which may be used instead of paper
filters. Please note the following:
Your coffee should be a medium grind; a very fine grind
could cause the filter basket to overflow. Scoop the
ground coffee into the center of the gold tone filter and
prepare your coffee as described below. To clean, rinse
the gold tone filter under running water. After using the
filter for some time, clean it with a soft brush or sponge –
do not use abrasive cleaners or scouring pads. The gold
tone filter can be cleaned in the dishwasher.
Fill tank with fresh cold water, press filter basket push
button release to open filter basket, insert a No. 4
paper filter or the Braun gold tone filter, put in ground
coffee, close the filter basket, and place the carafe on the
hotplate. Switch on the coffeemaker (manual or auto-
matic operation) as described above.
For greater convenience, when filling with or disposing of
ground coffee, the filter basket can be easily taken off its
hinge. The pause and serve feature prevents dripping
when the carafe is removed to pour a cup before brewing
is finished. Carafe should be immediately returned to the
hotplate to prevent the filter basket from overflowing.
Brewing time per cup: approximately one minute.
Amount of brewed coffee in the carafe will be below initial
filling level as water is retained by ground coffee during
the brewing cycle.
III Cleaning
Always unplug the appliance before cleaning. Never
clean the appliance under running water, or immerse it in
water; only wipe it with a damp cloth. All removable parts,
except the metal filter basket (KF 590 E model only), are
dishwasher-safe.
KF 590 E model onl
y:
Clean the metal surfaces of the filter basket with a damp
cloth only. You may use small amounts of dishwashing
liquid. Do not use steel wool pads or any abrasive
cleaners. Never use any solvents such as alcohol and
benzene.
IV Decalcifying
If you have hard water and you use your coffeemaker
without a water filter, it has to be decalcified regularly.
When using the water filter cartridge and exchanging it
regularly, you ordinarily will not need to decalcify.
However, if your coffeemaker takes longer than usual to
brew, it should be decalcified.
Im
portant: Replace water filter with the space compen-
sator during any decalcification procedure.
You can either use a commercially available
decalcifying agent, which does not affect aluminum
or distilled white vinegar (available at grocery stores).
If you are using a decalcifying agent, follow the
manufacturer's instructions.
If you are using white vinegar, please proceed as
follows:
Fill the tank to the 6-cup level with white vinegar.
Do not mix the vinegar with water or any other liquid.
Turn on the coffeemaker and allow half of the vinegar
to flow through.
Switch off the appliance and leave it for 10 minutes.
Switch it on again and allow the rest of the vinegar to
flow through.
Repeat either procedure as many times as necessary
in order to reduce the brewing time per cup to a
normal level.
Allow the maximum amount of fresh cold water to run
through at least twice to clean the coffeemaker after
decalcification.
Best practices for best results

(e.g., refrigerator) in an airtight container.
Use only Braun water filters and exchange every two
months with regular use.
Clean and decalcify the coffeemaker regularly as
described in parts III and IV.
