• The pump begins to work (a humming noise can be heard),
and shortly after, water runs out into the container.
• The espresso maker is ready for use when around half of
the water in the reservoir has been flushed through. Turn the
on/off knob to the off position (b).
USE
The espresso maker can be used to make espresso or
cappuccino. Once the water has heated up, you can make
several cups of cappuccino one after the other, and it is possible
to froth up milk for cappuccino etc. using the steam nozzle.
Heating up the espresso maker
• Check that there is enough water in the reservoir, and add
more water if necessary (see the section on ‘Flushing through’
above).
• Check that the steam regulator is turned clockwise as far as it
will go.
• Turn the on/off knob to the heating position. The espresso
maker heats up the water, and a bubbling sound can be
heard while the machine is working.
• When the OK indicator comes on in the heating position, the
espresso maker is ready for brewing coffee. It takes around
2 minutes, but the espresso maker works best if you wait at
least 10 minutes.
Making espresso
• Fit the sealing ring (11) in the base of the filter holder (6), and
check that it is correctly in place.
• Fit the required filter:
o If you want to make one cup of espresso, first place the
plastic insert (10) in the filter holder with the concave side
upwards. Then place the one-cup filter (9) over the plastic
insert. The pins on the outside of the filter must fit into the
holes on the inside of the edge of the filter holder. If the
plastic insert is in the wrong way round, the upper edge of the
filter will not be flush with the filter holder.
o If you want to brew two cups of espresso, place the two-cup
filter (12) in the filter holder (without first fitting the plastic
insert). The pins on the outside of the filter must fit into the
holes on the inside of the edge of the filter holder.
• Place coffee (ordinary filter coffee, espresso or a pre-dosed
‘pod’) in the filter. Use the tamper, if necessary, (13) to tamp
the coffee in the filter (pods should not be pressed).
o If the coffee is tamped hard, it runs through slowly, is stronger
than normal and produces dark foam. If the coffee is not
tamped down, it runs through more quickly, is less strong and
has lighter foam. Use trial and error to find the type of coffee
and how much you need to tamp it to get the result you want.
• Fit the filter holder on the brewing head:
o Take hold of the handle (8), and hold the filter holder up to the
brewing head with the handle pointing to the left.
o Turn the handle in towards the middle of the espresso maker,
until it points straight ahead and the filter holder is correctly in
place.
• Check that the espresso maker is ready for brewing coffee,
and place one or two cups beneath the filter holder.
• Turn the on/off knob to the brewing position. After a brief
moment, espresso runs out of the nozzles on the underside of
the filter holder.
• When the required amount of espresso has run through,
or the OK indicator goes off, turn the on/off knob to the
heating position (if you want to make more cups of espresso
immediately) or the off position.
• When removing the filter holder it is important to equalise the
pressure after brewing has ended to avoid coffee grounds
spraying up from the filter. Do this by pressing in the release
lever (7) on the side of the handle and then turning the handle.
• Empty the filter, rinse it, and put more coffee in it if you want
to make more cups of espresso straight away.
o Caution! The coffee in the filter is extremely hot!
Frothing of milk
• Check that the steam nozzle is fitted correctly.
• Turn the on/off knob to the frothing position (a), and wait until
the OK indicator comes on.
• Pour the required amount of milk into a container.
o Caution! The milk should come straight from the refrigerator.
o The milk expands to a certain extent during the frothing
process, so do not fill the container more than half full.
• The steam nozzle can be rotated around a ball bearing,
allowing it to point in different directions. Set the steam nozzle
to a practical position, and hold the container so the end of
the nozzle is in the milk.
• Turn the steam regulator in an anti-clockwise direction to
pump steam down into the milk. This action whisks the milk,
and a layer of froth forms on the surface of the milk.
• Once enough froth has been formed, and the milk has been
heated through, switch the steam regulator off by turning it
in a clockwise direction. Turn the on/off knob to the heating
position (if you want to make more cups of espresso) or the
off position.
Boiling water
• Heat water as described in the section ‘Heating up the
espresso maker’, and place a container beneath the brewing
head.
• Turn the on/off knob to the brewing position. Water runs out
of the brewing head.
• When the required amount of water has run through, or the
OK indicator goes off, turn the on/off knob to the heating
position (if you want to heat more water or make espresso) or
the off position.
Drip tray with overflow indicator
If you spill water, espresso or milk froth under the brewing
head, it collects in the drip tray (5). When it is full, a red overflow
indicator rises out of one of the holes in the grill on the drip tray.
Empty the grill when that happens.
Carefully lift up the tray, remove the grill and pour out the
contents. Take care not to scald yourself if the drip tray contents
are hot!
The drip tray should be emptied after each use to prevent
unpleasant smells.
Tips
• Heat the cups with boiling water before you pour espresso
into them. This will help them retain the heat better. Use small
but sturdy cups for espresso.
• Use special espresso coffee for the best espresso. This is
available from most supermarkets.
• Espresso should be drunk immediately after preparation.
• A cappuccino is made by pouring one or two cups of
espresso into a large cup and pouring hot frothy milk on top.
Add sugar to taste, and sprinkle over a little grated chocolate
or cocoa powder, according to taste.
CLEANING
Daily cleaning
• Before cleaning, remove the plug from the wall socket and
allow the espresso maker to cool down.
• Remove the drip tray and wash it and the grill, letting them
dry completely before fitting them again.
• The best way to clean the espresso maker itself is to wipe
it with a damp cloth using hot water and a little washing-up
liquid.
• Do not use any kind of strong or abrasive cleaning agent on
the espresso maker or accessories. Never use a scouring
sponge or similar to clean the espresso maker, as the surface
may be damaged.
• Remove the outer section of the steam nozzle by turning it to
the left and pulling it off. Pull the steel cap off the section of
the steam nozzle you have removed, and clean both sections
in soapy water. Wipe the remaining part of the steam nozzle
