7. Now that the main burner pressure is set properly you may adjust the main burner flame.
Unlock the air collars by loosening the set screw on each collar. Open the main gas valve,
(light the pilot if the appliance has a manual pilot) and turn the thermostat to light the main
burners.
8. Adjust the shape and size of the main burner flame by raising or lowering the air collars to
achieve a soft blue flame with well-defined inner cones. Refer to burner flame diagram to
determine the ideal flame profile.
9. When the main burner flames have been properly adjusted, lock the air collars in place by
tightening the set screws.
A. INSUFFICIENT FLOW - The flame impinges on the tank front. Tubes and baffles are
carbonized. Check vent and adjust if necessary. Check heat tube and flue for blockage.
B. EXCESSIVE FLOW – The flame seems to lift off the burner face. To correct, adjust
main burner pressure as describe in this section.
C. INSUFFICIENT FLOW – Low burner or supply pressure. Adjust burner pressure or have
gas company check incoming pressure.
D. NORMAL FLOW – Burner and pressure are adjusted properly. A soft, steady blue flame
enter the heat tube without impinging on the tube rim or tank front.
