HTTP and HTTPS in the PATROL DashBoard Environment
Chapter 1 Overview 23
Besides the server and client, the PATROL DashBoard product contains the following
components:
PATROL DashBoard Corporate Edition—provides a distributed architecture for
large networks, aggregating data from multiple PATROL DashBoard servers
and handling user requests for information about the network. See Chapter 9,
“Installing and Using PATROL DashBoard Corporate Edition,” on page 265 for
more information about this component.
PATROL DashBoard Integration for HP OpenView—allows you to view the data
gathered by PATROL DashBoard using HP OpenView. See Chapter 10,
“Installing and Using PATROL DashBoard Integration with HP OpenView,” on
page 281 for more information about this component.
Also, BMC Software offers the PATROL DashBoard Availability Module component,
with which you can use your PATROL console to view PATROL DashBoard data,
thereby streamlining your monitoring and management console environment. When
you see a problem that requires you to investigate further by using PATROL
DashBoard, you can launch the PATROL DashBoard interface from the PATROL
console. For more information about this component, see the PATROL DashBoard
Availability Module User Guide.
HTTP and HTTPS in the PATROL DashBoard
Environment
For enhanced security, you can use the HTTPS protocol to implement secure access to
a PATROL DashBoard server. You can use both HTTP and HTTPS at the same time;
just enter the appropriate URL beginning with http:// or https://, depending on which
protocol that you want to use.
Figure 3 on page 24 shows architecture that combines PATROL DashBoard servers,
PATROL DashBoard Corporate Edition, and PATROL DashBoard Availability
Modules (PDAM). HTTP and HTTPS protocols are used to communicate outside the
enterprise. Firewalls are responsible for access control, translation of IP addresses,
and selection of the correct port numbers, and HTTP is used exclusively behind the
firewalls. You are not restricted in your choice of HTTP or HTTPS connection.
Also, when you configure e-mail notifications about events, you can choose the HTTP
or HTTPS protocol for sending the e-mail messages.
