virtual channel (VC)
In an ATM network, the peer-to-peer connection between exchange cells. Between two nodes, a
VP is divided into VCs. From peer-to-peer, a VC crosses a series of VPs.
virtual LAN (VLAN)
(also logical LAN) A local area network with a definition that maps workstations on some other
basis than geographic location (for example, by department, type of user, or primary
application).
virtual path (VP)
The path between two nodes in an ATM network.
virtual private network (VPN)
A way to use a public telecommunication infrastructure, such as the Internet, to provide remote
offices or individual users with secure access to their organization's network. A virtual private
network can be contrasted with an expensive system of owned or leased lines that can be used
by only one organization.
virtual server
On the Internet, a server (computer and various server programs) at someone else's location that
is shared by multiple Web site owners so that each owner can use and administer it as though
they had complete control of the server.
VLAN
See virtual LAN (VLAN).
VoIP
See voice over IP (VoIP).
voice over IP (VoIP)
A technique of transmitting voice through IP networks.
VP
See virtual path (VP).
VPN
See virtual private network (VPN).
WAN
See wide area network (WAN).
Web client
The PATROL DashBoard client entity, which is a browser with applets that connects to a
PATROL DashBoard server.
