CONFIGURING NETWORK PROTOCOL PROPERTIES
The Administration > Setup > Network page allows you to set up
the protocols used by the client workstation to communicate with
the controller. You must configure the controller properly before
end users can perform network printing.
Although the protocols are set up during the installation process,
you can improve network performance by customizing the
settings for your particular network configuration. For example,
the default method for acquiring the controller’s IP Address is by
using DHCP. If your controller operates in a NetWare
environment (IPX), this default setting generates unnecessary
TCP/IP traffic.
Another example involves the default Auto Sense configuration
setting for the IPX protocol. With Auto Sense enabled, the
controller automatically determines the appropriate IPX frame
type and issues SAP packets over the network, which are used for
device discovery. This default setting makes device discovery
immediate and automatic, but it generates IPX packets on all
networks, even ones that only run TCP/IP.
You must be logged in as an administrator to set network protocol
properties.
Applying Changes to Protocol Settings
If you change the TCP/IP protocol settings or enable/disable a
network card, you must reboot the controller before the changes
take effect.
For information on rebooting the controller, see Rebooting the
Controller on page 56.
